Limestone Parents/Guardians,
At approximately 1:00PM, school administration received a report of a possible weapon in the school building and immediately contacted Bartonville Police Department. Within minutes of the initial report, a student was found to be in possession of a weapon and was immediately taken into custody. The school was put into a “hold” throughout the investigation.
The safety and security of our students is paramount, and the appropriateness of the educational environment is, of course, crucial to our mission. While this appears to be an isolated incident; beginning tomorrow and out of an abundance of caution, there will be enhanced security measures in place including, but not limited to:
additional police presence;
searching of students via metal detecting devices;
a strict no bag / clear bag policy will be enforced (bags will not be allowed into
the building, sports bags will be thoroughly searched before entrance);
limited movement throughout the building throughout the day.
I want to thank Bartonville Police Department for its swift response today. I also want to thank those who came forward with this threat information, which allowed for quick intervention before any harm. It is critical to remember, “See something, Say something, Do something.” Students, staff, and parents can report information to any administrator, a teacher, or trusted adult. Students can also use Safe2HelpIL to share concerns about themselves or others in a confidential environment.
At this time, our district will not be releasing the name of the student(s) and have turned the matter over to the Bartonville Police Department and state’s attorney’s office. Bartonville Police Department is continuing an investigation into the alleged conduct. The District has no further information regarding the investigation and cannot comment further on the law enforcement investigation, the potential criminal prosecution or related legal procedures.
We will provide further information as appropriate.
